This is an intriguing set of wines from the Scavino family. I find the 2020s on the lighter side, both in their colors and slightly evolved profiles. The 2021s are darker, with more layers and greater expression of place. The two vintages track along general trends for the years. In 2020, harvest took place from October 5 to 16, while in 2021, harvest was about a week later. Time on skins for the 2020s was 26-27 days, a bit shorter than in 2021. Malolactic fermentations tend to happen quickly here. All the Barolos are aged in cask. Azelia remains one of the most under-the-radar estates in all of Piedmont. The artisan, family-driven values that make Piedmont such a unique region are very much alive. The best Barolos here are compelling. At the same time, some recent wines are overly light to the degree that site character is lost.
