Luigi and Lorenzo Scavino did a very nice job with their 2012 Barolos. As is typical of the year, vineyard signatures aren't as marked as they are in some years, yet the wines are nevertheless quite attractive. According to Lorenzo Scavino, unstable weather in May and June caused an irregular set and loose bunches with fewer grapes on the vine. At times, the 2012s recall the 2008s, especially in their mid-weight structures, although the fruit profile is decidedly more red-fruit leaning than the generally darker 2008s. Hail was an issue in Bricco Voghera, so Azelia did not produce a Riserva. All the best fruit went into the straight Barolo.
