Vintage 2009 looks to have been especially challenging for Azelia. Proprietor Luigi Scavino told me the trick to the vintage was leaving more leaf cover than normal. That appears to not have been enough, though. The Azelia 2009s are quite a bit lighter than normal and also lack the site specificity that makes these wines so compelling. Over the arc of a long and highly successful career that is not a huge deal, but the fact is that Azelia's 2009s are not at the level that has been established here since the early 1980s.
