The 2018 Azelia Barolos are marked by a growing season with very difficult conditions. Heavy rain required more treatments in the vineyard than normal and greater deleafing to increase air circulation and stave off disease pressure. Over the last handful of years, Azelia has moved towards a much more refined style than in the past. The 2018s saw 55 days on the skins, including submerged cap fermentation, and were mostly aged in cask. Unfortunately, all the wines lack depth and site character. I tasted the 2018s twice, once in Piedmont in November 2021 and then in my office in New York in January 2022.
