Luigi and Lorenzo Scavino's 2004 Barolos are gorgeous. It's great to see the wines show so well, as Azelia is an estate that deserves far greater attention. The 2004s are fresh, vibrant and delicious today, but also have more than enough depth to drink well for years to come. Although often lumped into the modern school, Azelia has found a comfortable stylistic middle ground that results in wines that drink well early but also develop well in bottle. Case in point; in 2004, fermentations lasted 18-25 days and the Barolos were aged in French oak or casks, depending on the specific wine.

Readers looking for a first-rate Barolo producer whose pricing has remained very fair need look no further than the wines of Azelia and proprietor Luigi Scavino. These are among my favorite wines to drink, especially in restaurants, where they don't suffer from the larger markups that accompany some of the region's better known bottlings.
