Luigi Scavino has been crafting gorgeous Barolos for many years, but over the last few vintages Scavino and his son Lorenzo have taken quality to another level, which is obviously great to see. One of the things I love most about the Azelia Barolos is their ability to deliver pleasure throughout their entire lives, something that very few other Barolos are capable of, at least to this degree. The 2011 Barolos are even better today than they were when I tasted them just prior to bottling.

Azelia's 2011 Barolos are strong follow ups to the superb 2010s. In response to the warm, dry summer, Luigi Scavino and his son Lorenzo left more leaf cover than normal, as quite a few growers did. I tasted all of the 2011s from steel just before bottling. According to Luigi Scavino, a bit of rain in early September was especially beneficial to the Nebbiolos, which were picked a full 25 days after the Dolcettos, always the first grapes harvested in Piedmont.
