Serafin told me that the 2004 vintage required a lot of sorting and a long time to pick (he took a full 11 days). Happily, Serafin's 2004s were not particularly reduced in November, even though they had not yet been racked. He planned to rack in February and then bottle in April. The periods of rain in Gevrey in mid-August and again just before the start of the harvest here on August 30 "swelled the grapes a bit in a good way, and gave the fruit more complexity," said Serafin. He maintained that although some gravelly soils in the village suffered from lack of moisture, he had no such problems in Cazetiers or Charmes-Chambertin.Incidentally, Serafin was one of several growers who reported an attack of burrowing caterpillars that ate the fruiting canes and were yet one more factor in reducing the ultimate size of the crop.Serafin's 2002 have turned out splendidly.(Robert Kacher Selections, Washington, D.C.)
