My visit at Burlotto was one of the highlights of the time I spent in Barolo this fall. As has been the case in recent years, so many wines in the range are compelling. In 2020, the Barolo harvest started on October 5 with Monvigliero, followed by Cannubi and then Castelletto. The last pick was on the 12th for some smaller parcels. In 2020, Fabio Alessandria did not bottle his Barolo Acclivi because of damage from hail. Alessandria bottled his 2020 Barolos ten months earlier than the norm, with the exception of the Barolo Monvigliero because it saw a longer, submerged cap maceration. The choice to bottle much earlier than many other producers was largely driven by the style of the year, but also practical considerations, including a desire to always have casks full and Alessandria’s general disdain for leaving the wines in tank.
