My tasting at Burlotto was without question one of the highlights of my November trip. There are moments when wines go from being outstanding, even memorable, and enter the realm of the profound. That’s how I felt tasting through the 2016s at Burlotto. Every wine was just regal, truly magnificent. Fabio Alessandria has spent much of his life at Burlotto, but he was not able to focus full-time on the wines until 1999, the year he finished university. Since then, he has taken his family’s wines into the stratosphere, in what is really a pretty short period of time. The only problem with the 2016s is that yields are down 20-25% for the straight Barolo and Acclivi. "For many growers 2016 is a year of quality and production, but our yields are down. I really don’t know why,” Alessandria told me. “We made less wine than in 2015.”
