As I have mentioned in the past, the red wines at this storied estate have been going from strength to strength in recent years. I mentioned this to Paul Amsellem, Christine Vernay's husband, and we discussed red wines made by white wine specialists (as is the case here) and whites made by winemakers who specialize in red grapes. "Making white wine requires a more delicate touch," he posited, “and you can see that in Christine's reds, which are never overly structured or tannic, not worked." Indeed, the main impression I get from Vernay's Saint-Josephs and Côte-Rôties is one of finesse, and they are also quite approachable soon after release.
