According to Christine Vernay and her husband Paul Amsellem, '97, '98 and '99 have all been good but not exceptional vintages for Condrieu. The '97s, says Amsellem, were opulent, powerful, extra-ripe wines, while the '98s show more finesse. Fruit from the latter year was generally picked with good ripeness prior to the worst of the rains, though the estate wasn't able to leave grapes hanging into November in search of some botrytized berries, as they have tried to do in recent years. Nineteen ninety-seven was the first year in which Christine Vernay was solely responsible for winemaking here, and she told me that she vinifies her red wines like the whites: "Not a strong cuvaison and just a little pigeage following the end of the fermentation," she explained. "I don't look for confiture." (Charmer Industries, Astoria, NY; Commandeur, Inc., Minneapolis, MN; Southern Wines & Spirits, Union City, CA; World Wine Import, Atlanta, GA)
