Two thousand thirteen struck me as a classic vintage for this estate, which for decades has been producing fresh, structured wines with purity, precision and the structure for extended bottle aging. Marie-Andrée described the ‘13s as “very ripe,” even if grape sugars were in the moderate 11.5% to 12% range. Her sister Marie-Christine added that the ‘13s are a bit like the estate’s 2008: "tight and strict, with strong acidity and long malolactic fermentations.” The alcoholic fermentations were also a bit longer than average, and may have resulted in finer tannins, added Marie-Christine. "We were also careful not to extract a lot," she told me. The 2013s were bottled between February and June of 2015.

The 2013s got a good "natural" pre-fermentation cold maceration, said Marie-Christine Mugneret, since ambient temperatures were chilly during the harvest, which took place between October 2 and 8 here. Grape sugars were in the modest 11.8% to 12.3% range and the wines were lightly chaptalized. Marie-Christine believes the 2013s will give pleasure earlier than the deeper and more powerful 2012, but I found it hard to resist the sheer éclat of the '13s in November.
