Tom Dehlinger calls 2007 his favorite pinot vintage since 2004. "It's a black fruit year for us," he told me, "and just as concentrated as '04 but with more freshness to go with the concentration." He believes that the powerful fruit makes the wines immediately appealing but that "their depth and structure say that they're really wines for people who are patient." He is also bullish on the 2007 cabernets, which he said "will have a very long and positive trajectory; they've really exceeded my expectations." Dehlinger, who was a pioneer in planting syrah in America, is not one of the American producers gnashing his teeth over the difficulties of selling those wines these days. "I really believe in this grape in this area," he told me. "I never intended to make huge wines from the variety and that's not really possible here anyway. On the contrary, the possibility to make graceful and balanced syrah in the RussianRiverValley has already been realized."
