Like so many of his North Coast colleagues, Tom Dehlinger told me that cold weather during the 1998 flowering resulted in cluster variation and ultimately "spread out" the ripeness, especially with the pinot noir. Chardonnay in this part of the Russian River Valley was rather forward in '99, says Dehlinger, while the '98s were leaner. Incidentally, Dehlinger will not offer a Goldridge syrah in '98. In the four previous vintages, he separated out the Goldridge parcel (one of his three acres of syrah), but in '98 he made a special East Face bottling from the highest spots and shallowest soils, which produced smaller clusters and lower yields.
