I tasted a number of compelling 2016 and 2017 Barolos from barrel during my most recent visit to Scavino. In the last few years, the Scavino family has increased their number of wood fermenters and started experimenting with whole clusters and a generally more traditional approach to vinification. Naturally, it will be some time before those refinements are fully evident in the wines, but I left my visit very excited about what the future holds here. In the meantime, though, there is no way to get around the fact that the Scavino family endured a very challenging vintage in 2014, as the Barolos are lacking in complexity, structure and the character that has made them so distinctive for several decades.
