Scavino is one of the great, established families in Piedmont. Enrico Scavino, along with his daughers Enrica and Elisa, have built quite an empire over the last few decades. It seems like every time I visit, the family has acquired a new choice parcel. The 2011 Barolos are highly representative of the year. According to Enrico Scavino, while 2011 was a warm year, rain in June kept the plants from going into hydric stress. The 2011s spent ten months in French oak barriques followed by a year or so in cask. In 2011, Scavino has a new wine, the Barolo Riserva Novantesimo, which was created to celebrate the estate's 90th anniversary. As always, the Scavino Barolos are defined by their textural richness and opulence. When they are young, the wines are decidedly powerful and intense, but they have also proven to age exceptionally well.

Scavino's 2011 Barolos are quite pretty. The 2011s spent 10 months in French oak barrels followed by a year in cask. According to Enrico Scavino, temperatures didn't get very high until August and September, and the plants never went into hydric stress. This is a gorgeous set of wines from one of Piedmont's most consistent and reliable estates. I tasted the wines from tank just prior to bottling.
