This is a very pretty set of wines from Enrico Scavino and his daughters, Enrica and Elisa. The Scavinos have decided to show their young Barolos later than in prior years, hence their inclusion in this article. The 2013s are translucent, mid-weight Barolos full of character. I found that the 2013s needed a lot of air to start to be expressive. Stylistically, the 2013s are quite different from the dense, overt Barolos of the 1990s and 2000s that brought the Scavinos so much acclaim. It's hard to know if the 2013s are more reflective of the specific attributes of the year, or if they are indicative of a more important stylistic shift. Either way, the wines are markedly different in style from those of the past.
