Giorgio Rivetti and his longtime winemaker Stefano Mazzetta have done a terrific job with the 2014 Barbarescos. As always, the wines are bold, racy and exuberant in style. French oak has come down, yet it remains a distinct signature in the wines, especially in the early going. Although La Spinetta Barbarescos offer plenty of allure, I have had my best experience with these wines around age ten or so.

Like all of his colleagues, Giorgio Rivetti suffered through a very challenging harvest in 2014. Yields are down 30% across the board. Over the years, Rivetti has lowered the new oak influence in his wines, but these still remain racy, bold Barbarescos that lean towards the more modern end of the spectrum. Some of the opulence that is often present in these wines has been tempered by the cool, late-ripening vintage, a year I will always remember for many reasons, including getting stuck in the mud just outside La Spinetta's winery in Grinzane Cavour. Also tasted: 2014 Sauvignon Blanc, 2014 Chardonnay.
