La Spinetta had just bottled their 2012 Barbarescos at the time of my visit, so I was not able to taste them. The 2011s are just as strong today as they were a year ago. I also had a chance to taste the three 2005 Riserva Barbarescos. Proprietor Giorgio Rivetti makes some of the raciest wines in Piedmont, but in their best vintages, the wines have proven they develop very nicely in bottle as well.

I was super-impressed with the wines I tasted this year at La Spinetta. Proprietor Giorgio Rivetti and his team lead by Stephano Mazzetta have done a marvelous job with these current and upcoming releases. In particular, I was struck by how much the Barbaresco has improved over the last few years. The Spinetta 2010 and 2011 Barbaresco are gorgeous. The 2010s are a bit tighter and more nervous, while the 2011s have much more volume and near-term appeal. Both vintages are beautiful. I also tasted La Spinetta's 2004 Barbaresco Riservas, which are always made from the best parcels within the three Barbaresco vineyards the estate owns, and bottled only in magnum.
