Giorgio Rivetti describes his 2009s as "powerful but elegant and round." The Barolos, he told me in September, are like rounder, more floral versions of the 1999s. "The '09s are very consistent, whereas in 2008 the Barbarescos tend to be elegant while the Barolos are more powerful." Rivetti described 2007 as a hot year in which "it was harder to maintain floral and fruit character." I found better integration of oak here than on past visits. Rivetti told me he's now steaming his new barrels. He leaves the wines with their wild yeasts and keeps the light lees when the wines are racked from barrel into stainless steel. Like a number of his neighbors, Rivetti is now cutting back a bit on green harvesting in order to pick fruit with less exaggerated potential alcohol.
