Bruno Nada has been making compelling wines for many years. Today, Nada's son, Danilo, is taking on a more important role, so it will be interesting to see where he takes things over the coming years. The small, family-run estate is perched atop the Rombone vineyard. Bruno Nada has often told me that the challenge with Rombone is getting the tannins fully ripe. As such, harvests here are always on the late side, which means the wines are big and rich. I am not so sure there is only one expression that is possible from Rombone, but, then again, it's not my vineyard. The Barbarescos spend 15-17 days on the skins, undergo malolactic fermentation in steel and are aged for around two years in oak. The Manzola is done in cask, while the Rombone spends a year in French oak and a year in cask. The Rombone is aged entirely in oak.
