With their relatively elevated pHs, Boillot’s 2014 reds will probably be best for drinking over the near to medium term—i.e., from 5 to 12 years after the harvest. Some of these wines struck me as a bit diffuse when I first tasted them in November of 2015, but happily they show more energy now that they’re in the bottle.

Most of this estate’s vineyards were hit hard by hail in 2014, said Lydie Boillot, who told me that acid rot was more of an issue in Corton and Mercurey than in Volnay and Pommard. Estate-wide production was in the range of just 15 to 17 hectoliters per hectare, but that was higher than in the two previous vintages. The Boillots started harvesting on September 15, picking their Pinot Noir mostly before their Chardonnay—a bit riper than in 2013 but with similar acidity, according to Lydie. She believes that the 2014s will be for drinking before the 2013s and 2012s.
