The Boillots brought in their fruit between September 27 and October 3, thus finishing the harvest before the damaging weekend of rain on the 5th and 6th, according to Lydie Boillot. "The wines definitely have more phenolic ripeness than the 2014s," she added. Incidentally, the Boillots now own about 11 hectares of vines, just over half of them planted to Chardonnay. The 2013s were bottled last February.

"An easy-drinking vintage, very fruity and agreeable," says Jean-Marc Boillot about 2013. "It's not a monster of concentration." Potential alcohol levels were between 11.8% and 12% and Bollot chaptalized up to 12.8%. The fruit was showing the beginnings of rot but was relatively easy to sort, he told me, as the dried grapes fell off the vibrating table. He did just two or three punchdowns per cuvée. Boillot, who prefers fresh, pure wines to overly ripe ones, noted that his 2013 reds have good acid backbone, with pHs between 3.4 and 3.45.
