It should come as no surprise to followers of this estate that Jean-Marc Boillot harvested early in 2009, beginning on September 7 and picking fruit with potential alcohol in the 12.5% to 13% range. The pHs are generally 3.5 to 3.6, which Boillot describes as "high but not extreme; it gives the wines an unctuous character. They should be agreeable at any stage but should also last well." Boillot reminded me that he has done gentler extraction since 2002: usually only one pigeage per day, and only during the early stage of the fermentation, plus a remontage every two or three days. The 2009s had been moved into cuves several days before my visit and were on their finings. Boillot ventured the opinion that Volnay was his most successful village for red wine in '09. He also feels that his 2009s offer a very pure impression of terroir. (Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, AL)
