The Peay brothers, Andy and Nick, along with Nick's wife, winemaker Vanessa Wong, own 33 acres of pinot noir on the Sonoma Coast, along with 8 more of syrah and 5 of chardonnay. Vanessa, who has put in time in both Bordeaux and Burgundy (at Chateau Lafite-Rothschild and Domaine Jean Gros), worked at Peter Michael from 1996 until helping to establish Peay with the 2001 vintage. "We're not looking for high alcohol," Andy says of these wines. He stressed the importance of fastidious vineyard work and of picking block by block. "That's the only way you can make great, complex wine." Incidentally, Bob Cabral of Williams-Selyem (who, along with Failla, is the only purchaser of Peay grapes) went out of his way to praise the pinot he received from Peay in 2005, calling it "just beautiful-absolutely perfect."
