After providing a flush of excellent 2011s, Mother Nature dealt Herbert Weis a crippling joker in 2012. Hail in Kasel made it almost impossible to reach last year's heights. The 2012 Spätlese Alte Reben from 100-year-old ungrafted vines survived the tragedy and will certainly age well, but the rest of the collection is not quite up to what I have come to expect from this estate. To sweeten the bitter medicine, though, the estate finally released its 2009 ice wine.
