Herbert Weis's crop was down by more than half in 2005 due to wind and hail in late spring, which may have also had an effect on the quality of the fruit. After the exceptional performance in 2004, my expectations-considering the reputation of the vintage-were so high that they could probably not be fulfilled anyway. The finest wines were again those labeled as alte reben, or old vines, which are hand-picked from 100-year-old ungrafted vines. Given the low yields and old vines, the spatlese here is a bargain. (Dee Vine Wines, San Francisco, CA) Also recommended: 2005 Kaseler Nies'chen Riesling Spatlese Trocken Gold Capsule (86), 2005 Kaseler Nies'chen Riesling Spatlese Feinherb (85), 2005 Kaseler Nies'chen Riesling Auslese Feinherb (87), 2005 Kaseler Nies'chen Riesling Kabinett (85). Other wines tasted: 2005 Kaseler Nies'chen Riesling Kabinett Trocken, 2005 Kaseler Nies'chen Riesling Spatlese Trocken, 2005 Kaseler Nies'chen Riesling Kabinett Halbtrocken.
