Herbert Weis, who took over this property in 1982, has been on a winning streak for the past several vintages. In the context of my expectations, he probably turned in the best performance on the Ruwer this year.Often overlooked by consumers who know only Karthauserhof or von Schubert, his wines remain very reasonably priced. And, given the fact that the Alte Reben are hand-picked from ungrafted hundred-year-old vines, they are truly bargains. As his crop will be down by more than half in 2005 due to wind and hail in the late spring, readers should take advantage of the 2004s or those older wines that they can still find. For the price my favorite remains the 2003 Kaseler Nies'chen Riesling Spatlese #6 (89).(Dee Vine Wines, San Francisco, CA) Also recommended: 2004 Kaseler Nies'chen Riesling Spatlese Feinherb (85), 2004 Kaseler Nies'chen Riesling Kabinett (86), 2004 Kaseler Nies'chen Riesling Spatlese Trocken (86), 2004 Kaseler Nies'chen Riesling Spatlese (87), 2004 Kaseler Nies'chen Riesling Eiswein #3 (90).
