After his exceptionally classical 2004s, I was surprised that Herbert Weis did not make even better rieslings in 2005. Given the difficulty of the 2006 vintage, his effort this year was adequate recompense, with the old-vine spatlese and auslese being every bit as good as those from 2005. Hand-picked from 100-year-old ungrafted vines, these are the wines to look for. Given the low yields, the spatlese remains a true bargain, but it was the dry Grosses Gewachs, which is seldom seen in the States, that surprised me the most. (Dee Vine Wines, San Francisco, CA) Also recommended: 2006 Kaseler Nies'chen Riesling Spatlese Trocken (85), 2006 Kaseler Nies'chen Riesling Spatlese Trocken S (86), 2006 Kaseler Nies'chen Riesling Kabinett (85). Other wines tasted: 2006 Riesling Trocken, 2006 Kaseler Nies'chen Riesling Kabinett Halbtrocken, 2006 Kaseler Nies'chen Riesling Spatlese Feinherb.
