I tasted a large selection of wines with Joe Donelan, his sons Cushing and Tripp, and new head winemaker David Milner (who started at Donelan in 2017 as cellar master) on my most recent visit. The Donelans have decided to delay the release of their 2017 Rhône reds, so I did not taste those wines. Instead, the Donelans showed me a vertical of their Richards Syrah that I will be reporting on in a separate article. In the meantime, these new releases show the maniacal attention to detail and pursuit of excellence that is such a hallmark of the approach here. As always, the Donelan wines are made in a restrained style that is more about understatement than pure power.
