“The 2020 vintage was not too complicated,” winemaker Sabine Moillard told me when I dropped in at the domaine in Chassagne. “The growth cycle was always ahead of schedule, and we did not need to do many treatments in the growing season. The vines were a little stressed, but they now adapt easily to the warmth, and I didn’t see much grillure. We didn’t lose any leaves. I started picking on August 23 and it continued until August 27. The vinification was regular and the fermentation was quite slow. The alcohol level is around 13.0° but nothing above 14.0°. All the wines are bottled under natural cork. We always check the amount of dissolved oxygen in the bottles." Moillard is one of the under-the-radar winemakers in Chassagne whose wines deserve more kudos. This was a great set of wines, including a wonderful Virondot, not to mention a couple of splendid reds.
