The 20th century went out with a bang for red Burgundy lovers, with the 1999 vintage producing copious quantities of excellent to outstanding wine.
From the outset, the 1999 red Burgundies offered a rare combination of charm and power. Most of the better wines were balanced and alluring from the start, but they are evolving very slowly and still have plenty of life ahead of them. While many of the ‘99s I sampled with the producers this winter have gone through sullen stages in bottle, most of them have launched into their periods of peak drinkability. If you own these wines – and especially if you chose wisely at the outset – you will be amply rewarded.

Christian Amiot describes the 2000 vintage as "very ripe, requiring almost no chaptalization except for the village wines." Across the board, potential alcohol levels were at least half a degree higher than those of '99. The grapes were low in acidity, Amiot added, and he did a minor saignee in some cuvees to get more color and concentration. Despite the use of this technique, which can have the effect of accentuating a wine tannins, the tannins in 2000 are rounder than those in '99, which in turn were riper than those of '98.

Surprised by the sheer volume of the '99 crop, Christian Amiot did his strongest-ever saignee bleeding off a good 15% of the juice in search of greater concentration. Still, he describes his '99s as easier, more open wines than the '98s, thanks to their thoroughly ripe tannins. They will get an earlier bottling than the '98s.
