Christian Amiot has managed the neat trick of making unusually fleshy 1997 Chambolles that retain sappy freshness and considerable vineyard character. At the time of my November visit, Amiot planned to bottle his '97s in January, a good four months earlier than usual. The wines were only to have been racked just prior to the bottling. These wines should give early pleasure but also have the material and balance for mid term aging. Amiot more structured and ageworthy '96s have turned out very well indeed--in fact, I underestimated these wines when I tasted them from barrel a year ago.

Christian Amiot describes '95 as a bit like '93, with thick skins, very good material and moderate grape sugars. 1996, he says, is a year with good richness but less concentration than '95; the wines possess both higher acids and higher sugars than the previous year. He compares '96 to '90.
