Cantina del Pino releases a year later than most estates with the thought that the wines need more time in bottle. Even so, I was quite surprised by how closed the 2018s are, especially for the vintage. The 2018s were fermented mostly in steel and saw about 20 days on the skins. Aging was 24 months in cask, on the long side for Barbaresco, but the norm here. These are some of the last wines Renato Vacca made prior to his passing in 2020. Needless to say, it will be interesting to see how they age. In the meantime, Cantina del Pino looks like it is in steady hands under the guidance of Franca Miretti, Renato Vacca’s widow.
