I have to say, tasting these 2016s from Cantina del Pino was bittersweet, as proprietor Renato Vacca lost his battle with cancer earlier this year. “I have to get the estate ready for the future,” a visibly ill Renato Vacca told me last year as we sat down to taste the 2015s. It was the last time I saw him. In the 2016s, readers will find gorgeous, vibrant Barbarescos that capture all of the pedigree of the year. If opened young, the wines need a lot of air to show at their best. Vacca is survived by his wife Franca and daughter Anna. I am hopeful Cantina del Pino will continue to thrive, as it is one of the crown jewels of Piedmont.
