"Getting great clarity and energy into the wines" is how Cris Cherry described his evolution as a winemaker in recent years."That means blending of varieties to take advantage of each one's strengths" and, in the case of the 2011s here, plenty of whole clusters, which "emphasize spiciness and add spine and structure with relying too much on wood tannins."Cherry told me that he wants his wines "to hit hard, flavor-wise, but not be heavy and tiring."In other words, to act more like the elegant northern Rhone wines he personally loves, rather than like blockbusters.

I tasted a wide range of new and upcoming releases with proprietor Cris Cherry. The Villa Creek wines have always been delicious, but over the last few years, Cherry has begun moving his wines in a direction that reflects more maturity. A gradual move to larger barrels, less new oak, greater use of stems and the introduction of concrete are all choices that continue to inform these fabulous wines.
