I tasted a wide range of new and upcoming releases with proprietor Cris Cherry. The Villa Creek wines have always been delicious, but over the last few years, Cherry has begun moving his wines in a direction that reflects more maturity. A gradual move to larger barrels, less new oak, greater use of stems and the introduction of concrete are all choices that continue to inform these fabulous wines.

Cris and JoAnn Cherry, along with their son, were literally in the process of planting a steep hillside directly behind and above their winery, which will soon supply Villa Creek with mourvedre and carignan, supplementing the three and a half acres of grenache that was planted earlier this year. Cris Cherry told me that since high natural acidity is the norm in west Paso Robles, stems are ideal for buffering that acidity--thus the relatively high use of whole clusters by Cherry and many of his neighbors in their winemaking. He calls 2010 "a great grenache vintage, especially" that has produced wines with immediate appeal but should prove ageworthy as well thanks to their bright acidity and tension.
