Joey Tensley showed me an impressive range of wines on my most recent visit. The 2020s largely capture all the potential I sensed last year, while the 2021s, from a much cooler, vibrant vintage, are hugely promising. These powerful, heady wines are often compelling, as is the case with both the 2020s and 2021s. There is some whole cluster influence that nicely balances all of the richness Tensely coaxes from what is an enviable collection of sites. Tensely fans will also want to check out the new P2K series, which are made from some of historic sites in Santa Barbara.

I tasted a huge range of wines with Joey Tensley this year. The 2019s are aromatic, pliant, mid-weight wines that will drink well with minimal cellaring. They offer quite a contrast to the 2020s, wines from a growing season with three heat spikes. The 2020s are heady, concentrated wines that show a ton of potential. Tensley fans will also want to the check out the Fundamental range of entry-level offerings and the new Optik wines he is making from Bien Nacido fruit.
