Joey Tensley's wines have evolved pretty dramatically over the last few years. There is still plenty of textural depth and radiance, but eliminating one punch down a day and going for a little less extraction overall has begun to yield wines with exceptional purity and transparency to site. These are some of the most exciting Syrahs being made in California today.

Once again I told Joey Tensley that prices seemed low for his wines' quality in comparison with neighboring wineries' prices, and once again his response was "yeah, and I'm sold out and they aren't." Good point. Tensley described his ideal wines as ones that "have richness and freshness, in equal parts," and thinks that the windy, high-altitude vineyards that he mostly works with are ideally suited to making such a style. "The diurnal shifts are also important," he added, "because it's way too easy for sugars to run up fast in the hot spots around here, like in 2012 and 2013, which forces your hand with harvesting." By the way, this year marked the first harvest from Tensley's own vineyard in Los Olivos, which is now planted to just over two acres of vines.
