Chad Melville made a number of memorable wines at SAMsARA, where he worked with fruit from a number of top-notch sites. Melville has now taken over winemaking duties at his family's estate, so it was hardly surprising that he sold SAMsARA. New owners Joan and Dave Szkutak have brought on Matt Brady, previously at Jaffurs, to make the wines. SAMsARA carved out a niche for itself with daring, creative Pinots and Syrahs. It will be interesting to see what Brady does over the coming vintages. As was his practice, Chad Melville made these wines with a fair amount of whole stem inclusion and native fermentations with minimal new oak influence.
