Montepeloso is one of the most exciting and dynamic estates on the Tuscan coast. Stylistically, the wines have undergone quite an evolution here in recent years. Harvest is now typically at the end of August and early September, a good 10-15 days earlier than in the early days. Proprietor Fabio Chiarelotto has also shortened time in barrel, another choice that has left the wines with greater energy than in the past. Lastly, Chiarelotto removed Montepulciano from his Eneo and Nardo blends and replaced it -with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon. “Two thousand twenty-two was a very hot and dry year with no rain in August, but not as hot as 2017 or 2003 because evenings were cooler,” explained Chiarelotto, referring to his flagship wines. “Even so, we picked earlier than normal in order to preserve as much freshness as possible.” Readers will note the introduction of Lupo, a new 100% Sangiovese made from very old clones that yield a lighter style of red wine, like those that were common in the 1960s and 1970s.
