This tasting was one of the highlights of my recent trip to Maremma. Proprietor Fabio Chiarelotto and longtime winemaker Fabrizio Moltard have turned out a magnificent, thrilling set of wines. The 2016s are majestic, while the 2018s, which I tasted from tank, show how well warmer sites handled 2018. Of course, as readers will see, the opposite was true in 2017. Today the wines spend less time in wood and there is more attention to cooperage overall. More importantly, the wines have never been better.

It's great to see Montepeloso back on track. The wines I tasted during my most recent visit were nothing short of thrilling. Like many properties, Montepeloso endured a brutal 2017. Yields were down a punishing 60%. As a result, proprietor Fabio Chiarelotto and longtime winemaker Fabrizio Moltard opted to bottle just one wine, the entry-level A Quo. The 2016s, which I tasted prior to bottling, are shaping up to be monumental. Readers will find all of the pedigree of this important Tuscan vintage in a set of wines that is positively dazzling.

It's great to see Montepeloso and proprietor Fabio Chiarellotto bounce back so quickly after the wildly disappointing 2013s. According to Chiarellotto, a bacterial issue on the bottling line adversely affected those wines. I saw no such issues with the 2015s. Over the last few years, Chiarellotto has backed off some of the overtness his early wines showed. Even so, these are deep, resonant wines that capture all the magic of Maremma. The highly regarded winemaker Fabrizio Moltard consults.
