Variety being the spice of life and all, Matt Trevisan told me that his latest obsession, along with bread-making, is trying to get as much individuality into each of his wines as possible. "It's boring to open up a few different wines and find that they're really not that different," he told me. While he wants "to keep a certain bloodline" in the lineup, he also prefers to give each of his bottlings "a reason to exist apart from the others, otherwise I might as well just make a couple of wines, or even just one, but that would be incredibly boring, and I hate repetition." To that end he's constantly fiddling around with the blends and working with a variety of different concrete ("which keeps things vibrant") and oak vessels (about 25% new is the general rule) of varying shapes and sizes, and also varying fermentation lengths and bottling times. He told me that he's making an effort to tighten up the wines and is looking for more focus and restraint "because elegance and complexity are more interesting and challenging than massiveness."

Matt Trevisan makes some of the most compelling wines in Paso Robles at Linne Calodo. The 2011s I tasted were consistently brilliant. The late released 2010s are also strong, but less consistent across the board.
