According to Steve Kistler, "2005 was just a wonderful growing season, with no heat spikes, and the fermentations were textbook, with long malos extending into the spring." He noted that he has cut back on his lees-stirring regimen "to better preserve purity." When I mentioned the depth and intensity of his pinot noirs, he told me that "with the Calera clone, it's easy to get that character," adding that he routinely brings in low yields-for example, less than a ton an acre from Occidental Station in 2005.
