If Dr. Manfred Prum does not make good Riesling in a given vintage, you can bet that it was probably impossible to do. With over 50 vintages under his belt, he is not only the grand old man of the region, but also a source of inspiration for the current generation of winemakers. His inimitable, reductive style, which is often difficult to understand in its youth, and was once confusing even for his colleagues, has become the benchmark for the spatlese and auslese styles that are the hallmarks of the middle stretches of the Mosel. On the 14 wines I tasted here, 13 merited an A and three were among the finest wines of the vintage. An impressive report card!
