Sisters Vittoria and Marta Alessandria make three Barolos from their estate vineyard in Monforte. In theory, the top wine is the Barolo San Giovanni, which emerges from the oldest vines on the property and sees a bit more oak than the straight bottling. In many vintages, though, I prefer the straight Barolo, which has proven to age as well or better. It typically offers a bit more freshness and less oak impact. The Barolo EnPiasì is done with hand destemmed fruit and sees much more time on the skins. It can be terrific, but in 2019, the logistical challenge of making a small-production bottling seems to have introduced some awkward notes.
