These are some of the best Barolos I have tasted from Gianfranco Alessandria. The 2014s are both very nicely done. The straight Barolo tends to be more perfumed and red-fruited in its profile, while the San Giovanni is a darker, bigger wine. New oak is less intrusive than it once was, while fermentations and winemaking in general are more gentle. As this family-owned estate enters its second generation, my impression is that Alessandria is very well set up for the future.
