Gianfranco Alessandria makes two Barolos from his vineyards in Monforte. The straight Barolo is the brighter of the two wines, while the San Giovanni is darker and richer. In 2012, I have a slight preference for the straight bottling. Over the last few years the oak influence has come down. The straight Barolo sees 25-30% new oak while the San Giovanni gets 45-50% new barrels. Both wines undergo malolactic fermentation in tank.
