Readers will find plenty of early appeal in these 2011s from Vincent & Sophie Morey. The wines are open, resonant and deeply expressive throughout the range. Harvest started on September 9, relatively late for the year. Yields came in around 52-55 hectoliters. Vincent Morey gave his 2011s a bit of batonnage (lees stirring) every 15 days until the malos were finished. As always, the house's wines are defined by the volume that is obtained through lees stirring and the use of 45-50% new oak barrels.

Vincent Morey described his young 2012s as "a bit richer than the 2011s, but with not quite the same purity due to hail and mildew."Yields were down from 2011 levels but Morey nonetheless described them as "pretty good."He chaptalized moderately across the board and the crus will eventually be bottled with about 13.5% alcohol. The malos finished by late January and the wines had been racked two months prior to my visit and returned to barrel with their fine lees.Morey told me that he stirred the lees a couple of times after the end of the malos (until the end of February) whereas in 2011 he stopped before Christmas following the very early malos.

Vincent Morey reported that the 2011s have acidity levels like the 2010s but with one degree less alcohol across the board.Beginning on September 1, he picked his fruit with potential alcohol between 11.8% and 13% and chaptalized lightly.Even the Batard-Montrachet here was just 12.8% at harvest, and Morey told me it was the first time he had added sugar to this cuvee.Incidentally, brothers Vincent and Thomas have split up their vines in Batard and now pick their parcels separately, but Vincent noted that they still harvest on the same day.
