Only a single Châteauneuf was made here in 2013 because, as elsewhere, "the Grenache crop was so small," Thierry Usseglio told me. He felt that it made more sense to make “a single, excellent wine" than to struggle to make a little bit of Mon Aïeul and Reserve des Trois Frères that few people would ever get to try. "Making sure the classique is as good as possible is always the priority because that's the wine that most people associate with your name," Thierry added.

Here's another estate whose vines were hit so hard by the miserable flowering in 2013 that they opted to produce only a single Châteauneuf bottling. Since the Grenache harvest for the domain was off by almost 40%, "it didn’t make sense to produce just a little bit of the cuvées," Thierry Usseglio reported. "It was better to focus on making the best traditional bottling possible and to be happy with that, plus hope for better luck in 2014," he added with a "what-are-you-gonna-do" shrug.
